INTERIOR PAINTING
Preparation and Cover Up: Cover up is important! We use drop cloths to protect your floors and carpets. We mask off baseboards or floors to keep splatters from happening. It is much easier to cover it up than to clean it up! We use clean drops or clear plastics to cover your furniture. Existing enamels surfaces, such as painted walls, doors, casings and windows are lightly sanded, dusted and cleaned as necessary to remove dirt. The new paint must adhere and proper preparation will ensure a good job. Finer sandpaper is used for interior work for a smoother finish look. Flat walls are cleaned if excessively dirty. We use TSP or other appropriate cleaner to wash. Cracks are caulked with latex caulking. Holes are filled with spackle or caulking, depending on finish coat used. Any loose paint must be scraped away first before sanding, cleaning and caulking. Very bad cracks may have to be taped with sheetrock tape and joint compound and retextured. This is more extreme and requires more trips and costs extra. Those such needs are thoroughly discussed before the job starts.
Choosing Colors: Most interior painting is done with shades of whites. Body color with lighter trim tends to lighten up a room and make it appear larger. Body color with darker trim tends to define a room and give it a more cozy feeling. Body color with matching trim ends to simplify a room and open it up. Painting your ceiling DARKER than the walls will bring the ceiling height down and create a more intimate or cozy space (great for high and vaulted ceilings). Most people paint the walls and ceilings the same. This creates a clean, open look and saves on labor and materials. Painting your ceiling LIGHTER will visually increase the height of the room.
Choosing Paints: The five main choices are Flat interior latex - available in regular grade and washable - covers well, looks good. Satin interior latex - very washable - covers well - used for kids' rooms. Eggshell interior latex or oil - very washable, covers well, looks good - becoming very popular. Can be used for walls, ceilings and trim as well. Semi-gloss interior latex or oil is usually used in kitchens, baths and on trim - very washable. Gloss interior latex enamel is usually used only on very smooth surfaces. The higher the sheen, the more imperfections are shown. This is the most expensive paint to apply, because it requires more time and effort to apply perfectly.
